Why are there different regions for Matcha?
Similar to wine and coffee, the geographic region and the exact species of the tea plant is important to understanding how to create a well-balanced matcha. Each region has distinctive characteristics, with variation in soil, elevation and farming methods. We searched for matcha that we loved and thought our customers would enjoy too.
Where is 三重県 Mie?
Located on the east coast of Japan's Kii Peninsula, Mie is part of the Kansai region and borders well-known places such as Aichi, Nara and Kyoto. It is home to some of the holiest Shinto shrines with the Suzuka mountains to the north-west and Nunobiki Mountains.
Why Mie for Matcha?
Mie experiences temperatures differences over the year and even daily over their first harvest season. We have been told the seasons are important for the plants to hibernate over winter, holding the nutrients so that when Spring arrives the sweet and umami flavours produced are unique to them.
The nutrients held from Winter are hibernating and so the best nutrients come from the first growth/harvest in Spring With their soil being located at the bottom of the mountains and natural water running through them it is a rich soil that has a deliciously sweet flavour and aroma to it.
What does Mie matcha taste like?
We have found our Mie matcha to be sweeter than our current Kyoto matcha, which has a stronger and sharper flavour.
Our Superior Mie Matcha flavour profile has rich umami, intense sweetness, light floral and light astringency for a delicious, light and sweet matcha with good body/mouthfeel.
This is May's favourite for tea. This particular batch is a single origin, meaning it is made from one species or cultivar of leaf. This is a Okumidori single origin/cultivar. We have a limited amount of this and it is unlikely to be resold from this region. Make sure you try it while you can. The next season will be a new harvest and potentially a new blend as per the tea masters taste.
The premium Mie matcha is also First Harvest leaves but a blend of multiple cultivars. It has a sharper flavour, signalling that it is considered a slightly lower grade, hence why it is premium. It is however, still mellow and sweet. A delicious choice for matcha lattes and baking.
