Bubbling Chasen Long Handled Bamboo Whisk - Japanese

$100.00

This long handled Shin Chasen is a unique design from Suikaen. It is the same shape as the standard Kazuho chasen but with a longer handle. Perfect if you are whisking in a cup or harder to reach places. It's delicately tied together with green thread.

We are proud to be stocking these beautiful artisan made bamboo whisks from Yasaburo Tanimura of Suikaen. Hailing Takayama (高山) in the Nara Prefecture, they are 1 of 18 artisan whisk makers left in the Japan and have been in the industry for 530 years.

Bamboo sourced are organic and left to dry before production begins, a process that takes 2 - 3 years from start to finish. It is sun-dried for 2 months from Jan to Feb. Doing this process, the bamboo naturally strengthens and creates a natural gloss. It is then stored for 2 years before crafting. By keeping the bamboo dry, it reduces the likelihood of cracking therefore a stronger and durable quality whisk. Each whisk is carved by hand with precision. This is the key difference of Japanese-made bamboo whisks over bamboo whisks made elsewhere. Mass produced bamboo whisks, are often made with machines and/or chemicals and skip the drying process and use oxygen absorbers to compensate.

Each bamboo whisk is unique - no 2 whisks will look the same. Clean your chasen by whisking in a bowl with warm water. Avoid using detergent. Stand upright to dry then rest on a ceramic whisk holder to reshape.

FAQ

What does matcha taste like?

It is rich, balanced yet sharp. The lighter and more mellow the higher quality the matcha is. Our matcha selection is unique to our the region and blend of tea leaves. Generally speaking it has a sweet, earthy aroma and tang. Poor quality Matcha will taste bitter and be close to yellow tones as opposed to those with deeper green tones.

How many servings do I get?

Generally, 1g per drink so 50gs means 50 servings. If you like your matcha strong, it's probably 2g so 50gs means 25 servings. Here's a tip for tea drinkers - if you leave your tea to settle, you can top up hot water to mix in with the Matcha, giving you an extra cup (or two) to drink!

Why should I choose Thea Matcha

We have done countless hours of tastings and research to find matcha that tastes great and is a good quality. We work with our tea masters to find out more about our matcha flavours and where it is coming from. We make sure we don't tell you something is a high quality if it isn't, which was what we had experienced before we started Thea ourselves. Think of your favourite wine or coffee, why do you choose this over others? Try our matcha and taste what we believe is delicious matcha.

Should I choose Premium or Superior?

Premium is our everyday green caffeine. It's more affordable, a little more bitter but this also makes it better for lattes and baking. It is still great as tea if you don't mind a sharper matcha flavour.

Ceremonial or First Harvest/Superior grades are for serious tea drinkers, best serves as tea, just with water. These leaves are limited in quantity and can be seen as the 'champagne' of teas. It is better for those who prefer a lighter but more complex flavour.

About us

Family Run

Enna and May are cousins born and raised in New Zealand who share a love for green tea. Our family in Japan helped us source our first matcha and continue to help us today.

Why the name Thea?

Green tea is part of the Theaceae family, has the 'happy' amino acid l'theanine and means tea. Thea also happens to mean goddess/ is a kick-ass Titaness. It was simple, relevant and captured the essence of what we wanted this venture to be.

Since 2016

We have been curating matcha and redesigning for nearly a decade! The concept started in 2015 and we launched in 2016. We've been working multiple jobs to continue to share our matcha with you.
